ABOUT THE READING ROOM
Welcome to the Delos Reading Room! This is a place to learn
more about Voice Dialogue, Relationship, and The Psychology
of Selves. Perhaps you are here because you are already
familiar with our work. Perhaps you have arrived via Internet
surfing and a general curiosity about the many selves that
make up the human psyche. Whatever your route has been,
we are glad to have you with us.
Our reading room offers you a variety of readings and
we would like to help you to choose among them. We have
divided
the Reading Room articles into four pages. The first page
is "Articles by Hal and
Sidra Stone," the second page is "FAQs"
(Frequently Asked Questions) answered by Hal and Sidra
Stone, and the third page is "Articles
by Others." This offers us the opportunity to
showcase some of the excellent work that is being done
by those who
have trained in Voice Dialogue. The fourth page is "Book
Chapters": this allows you to read and/or print out
a pre-selected chapter from each of our books.
The first article in this reading room, The
Basic Elements of Voice Dialogue, Relationship and The
Psychology of Selves:
Their Origins and Development, was written early in 2007.
In this article, we describe what we currently see as the
most important aspects of our work, we share with you the
history of its evolution, and we trace back to our initial
sources of inspiration. Our aim in this article is to share
with you the combined personal and professional "joint
venture" that has been our life's work.
The next three articles we have included here were written
in the late 1980's for "Psychotherapy," an Australian
journal for psychotherapists.
The first of these, "The
Dance of The Selves in Relationship," shows
the interactions of these selves in relationship. The second
article, "The Inner Critic", will introduce you
to the Inner Critic, that nagging critical voice that causes
great psychological pain as it examines us and finds us
wanting. The third article, "A
Professional Point of View - The Psychology of Selves" is written for
mental health professionals and is not intended as a "how
to" for laymen. We would caution you to begin exploring
your many selves with the guidance of a Voice Dialogue
professional.
"Discovering Our Selves" is an informal anecdotal
presentation of the development of Voice Dialogue written
for Gary Zukav's
website. "Judgment and
What to Do with It," clarifies
the meaning of judgment and how we can use it to enhance
our consciousness.
"Partnering: A New
Kind of Relationship" is an article we wrote for "Holistic
Health Journal" in May 2000 on our book by the same name.
The following shorter articles, were written for the
producer of "The
Voice Dialogue Series," Dr. John Coroneos, for inclusion in his newsletter, "Voice
Dialogue Tips."

The last two articles are open letters. The first, A
Letter From Hal and Sidra Stone, was our personal response to
9/11 and the second was an Open
Letter to President George W. Bush that was a reaction to his foreign policy.
FAQs
In our FAQ’s section (Frequently Asked Questions)
of our Reading Room, we offer brief answers to basic questions
that have been repeatedly asked of us such as: "What
are the Selves?" and "What
is the role of the Aware Ego?" "Consciousness
and Spirituality" is
Hal's response to a letter he received asking about the
relationship of the Psychology of Selves to spirituality.
A question from Australia prompted Hal to discuss "Is
the Aware Ego I Am?" A question
about God’s
existence led Hal to write “Voice
Dialogue, God and Guides."
The "Articles by Others" section begins with
an excellent article from Susan Schwartz Senstad of Norway
entitled, "When Alarm
Bells Should Ring: Recognizing Personality Disorders"
This article gives the Voice Dialogue facilitator some guidelines
about when to proceed with extra caution, when to refrain
from using Voice Dialogue, or when to refer an individual
elsewhere. Her second article,
"Voice Dialogue: From a User's Manual for the Human
Being at Work." combines her background as a psychotherapist
with her talents as a novelist. The third article, "Voice
Dialogue Facilitation: Exploring New Ground" is
an Interview with Miriam Dyak, author of the new, outstanding
book, The Voice Dialogue Facilitator's Handbook - Part
I, in the recent edition of "Hellerwork Ink."
Any of you who have had an opportunity to look at this
new book will appreciate its excellence and its value to
the Voice Dialogue participant. It is available through
this site through the Book Store. The third article, "Symphony
or Cacaphony: MBTI and Voice Dialogue." This is
actually a speech given at an MBTI Conference in France
by Pierre Cauvin and Genevieve Cailloux. We feel it illustrates
well how Voice Dialogue can be combined with other modes
of self-discovery. The fourth article "Know
Thyselves: Self Integration with Voice Dialogue"
by Victoria Resch in 1997, is taken from "Well Being
Magazine," a beautiful Australian publication that
deserves notice.
The fifth is a Partnering Review called "What
is the Self? The Work of Hal and Sidra Stone - Voice Dialogue"
written for "Living Traditions" Magazine
by its editor, Bob Ledgewidge. An interesting addition to
this room is Valerie Andrews articles, "Multiple
Selves: Expanding Our Notion of Identity," from
Intuition Magazine, Issue 20, Fall 98. J'aime ona
Pangaia's article "Some
Thoughts on Shamanic Healing in the Framework of the Psychology
of the Aware Ego," is a discussion of her experience
with both studies. Buddhist Priest Genpo Roshi's story as
told to Diane Olson Rutter is,
"The Search for "Big Mind." On 9/11/2002,
we sent out this article by Susan Schwartz Senstad of Norway,
"The
Wisdom of Vulnerability," so appropriate in remembrance
of this tragic day. "The
Artists Visits The Aware Ego,"by Trina Swerdlow,
is a comedic view of the Aware Ego seen through the eyes
of the graphic artist .
Adding to the multi-dimensional expression of the world
of Voice Dialogue with "Poet's
Corner - Voice Dialogue in Poetry" with poems by
Yolanda Koumidou-Vlesmas and Neil Meili. The contribution
"Polarities
in Personal Coaching" is by Liesbeth Halbertsma
and Robert Stamboliev. They mean
to show how, during coaching sessions, people may become
aware of their strong points as well as the related opposites.
Astra Niedra, author of The Perfect Relationship, wrote
these great articles for the June/July issue of Australia's
"YEN! Magazine," "Me
Me Me!", and for the Autumn 2003 Issue of "International
Well Being", "Making
Relationships Work." The next article is actually
a discussion on "False
Selves" on the Forum that we felt shouldn't be
missed. Voice
Dialogue and Personality is a wonderful exploration
by Pierre Cauvin and Genevieve Cailloux of Osiris Conseil.
Next, is a delightful set of Voice
Dialogue Drawings done by Silje Alberthe Kamille Friis.
She uses them in her trainings. A clarifying, concise contribution
is Facilitation
Under Supervision from Martha-Lou Cohen(nee Wolff),
a very interesting article on facilitation. Christobel Munson
of Australia has written this great article on Voice Dialogue
as a tool in a group-living situation, 'Life
As Us': The Challenge of Living Together. Hal
and Sidra were inspired to write a preface to a poem they
received, How
to Integrate a Disowned Self, from Dr. Ellen Sullins.
J'aime ona Pangaia has contributed an enlightening article
on "being/doing" and "ordinary/special"
entitled Paradoxical
Meaning of Life. In her latest article, Personal
and Impersonal Energies, J’aime continues her
explorations of energetic opposites as she presents some
fascinating new ideas about how to look at the personal
and impersonal energies and new exercises she has developed
for working with them.
A very exciting new way of looking at the Aware Ego process
comes from the world of modern neuroscience in the article,
“The
Neurobiology of the Aware Ego - Redefining the Self”,
by John Dougherty, M.D. and LeAnne Dougherty, D.S.W. who
theorize that the Aware Ego process - as an executive choice
maker – might be related to the activities of the
anterior cingulate cortex.
Many of you have voiced an interest in how our work relates
to transpersonal experiences. In “Voice
Dialogue as an Entryway to the Transpersonal”,
Jerien Koolbergen, Ph.D. & Robert Stamboliev, M.A.,
two senior teachers who have spent many years working in
both areas, give an excellent and thoughtful presentation
of the interface between Voice Dialogue and the transpersonal.
“Dorsey Cartwright has created an attractive, thought-provoking
poster “Voice
Dialogue: Healing Polarities from Families to Politics”
(2 megabite pdf). She has given permission
to print this out and use it if you wish. Or, if you would
like her to have one created specifically for you, she can
replace her information with yours for a fee of $95. “
“The Creativity of
Voice Dialogue – within a psychotherapy relationship”
is an article written to introduce the work to psychotherapists
Judith Hendin - a dancer, body worker and Voice Dialogue
facilitator – uses this rich background in the work
she calls “Conscious Body”. She describes her
work with physical symptoms, and the search for the self
that seems to be embodied in them, in a fascinating article:
The Excitement of the Search:
Looking for the Self Behind the Symptom. In another approach
to working with the body, Yolanda Koumidou-Vlesmas has applied
Voice Dialogue and the Psychology of Selves to working with
weight issues. She helps people to identify and maintain
their natural weight by identifying - and then working to balance
- the specific selves involved with food and eating. She
presents her findings in an excellent article The
Inner Eaters System.
“Voice Dialogue has proven helpful in many contexts.
In “A little more
than 19 years ago”, Lisa Berman – a social
worker and a suicide survivor – shares her personal
journey in this speech given for Suicide Survivor Day,
2007. In it, we can see how Lisa’s ability to think
in terms of selves and to look at their many different
reactions to this life-changing event has been a real support
over the past years.”
For ideas on how to use Journaling creatively with the
Psychology of Selves, we have included an excellent new
article, Journaling with
you Inner Selves,
by Anne Dobbertin, LCSW-C and Mary Disharoon, LMFT. They
present their journaling technique for use with the selves — a
technique they have based upon Voice Dialogue.
We want this to be like a real reading room, one in which
you can browse through our books and decide which you might
want to read. We've included a chapter from each book and,
since we do change these chapters, we suggest that you return
to this part of the website from time to time to check up
on the latest additions. We're delighted to present Chapter
10, "Partners on the Path, Spirituality and Partnering,"
of our latest book, Partnering:
A New Kind of Relationship. We hope you get a laugh
from the first chapter the first chapter from our basic
"How Not To" book, You
Don't Have to Write A Book. We hope you enjoy reading
it as much as we enjoyed writing it! As we are constantly
updating this site, we have just taken Chapter One from
Embracing Our Selves
off and put up Chapter Two, "Disowned Selves: Our
Lost Heritage." We have also just added the Introduction
and Chapter One of The
Shadow King, titled "Realm of the Shadow King."
Embracing Heaven
and Earth gives the first chapter of Hal's autobiography,
a personal look at his growing up years. We also include
Chapter Two from Embracing
Your Inner Critic. Last, we have chosen the first
chapter of Embracing
Each Other which gives a clear overview of
the development of personality and our theory of relationship.
Enjoy!!
